Alexandra Palace lighting installations up for two major awards

01 September 2022

Our overhaul of lighting systems at Alexandra Palace has been shortlisted for two major awards – ‘Small Project of the Year (Up to £5 million)’ at the Building Awards and ‘Lighting Project of the Year’ at the Build Back Better Awards.

Alexandra Palace is a famous, multi-use complex which was designed for use by the community and as an event venue and specialist filming location. The areas identified to be relit and/or rewired included:

  • The BBC Mast
  • The recommissioned East Court
  • West Hall
  • Ice Rink
  • Ice Rink Café

The brief was to bring to life and enhance user experience while providing significant improvements to look and feel, improving the customer journey, reducing carbon emissions and providing significant energy savings – within a budget of £2.5 million.

The team at the Palace required a dramatic lighting design that could be easily controlled while providing the ability to interact with outside inputs and complex theatre controls.

Working with stakeholders, contractors and suppliers, we designed a system that didn’t just replicate the existing one, but significantly improved on reliability, carbon footprint, controllability and the exploitation of the space for colour and spectacle.

We worked with the Palace to obtain Salix funding, allowing them to take advantage of downtime during the pandemic to enrich their space through sympathetic design, with the aim of reusing and reinvigorating their existing installations and supplementing them with state-of-the-art solutions.

In addition to significant carbon reduction, energy savings resulted in a significant reduction in operating costs, allowing the Palace to reinvest in much needed maintenance to other systems.

All works were completed within budget by empowering the contractor to actively look for ways to reduce costs while working within design parameters. The speed of the installation programme and the complexities associated with working within an ageing performance space could easily have become overwhelming for all parties, but the project team worked collaboratively to ensure the project was delivered on time and within budget.

The Building Awards will take place at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel on 1 November, while the Build Back Better Award winners will be announced on 12 September. Congratulations to Alexandra Palace and to all our partners on this exciting scheme for these well-deserved awards nominations!
