‘Students have moved on from beans on toast’
The Manchester office of multi-discipline property practice Ridge and Partners (Ridge) has completed a major design commission at Lancaster’s largest student housing scheme. The company’s building services team designed the Luneside project’s ‘complex’ mechanical and electrical needs.
The scheme, by Luneside East Ltd, provides 431 student bedrooms in clusters and studios on a prime riverfront site on St. George’s Quay. The £25m project is split across four buildings ranging in height from 3 to 6 storeys and was built by Eric Wright Construction.
“One of the key design considerations was the designing and installing a centralised energy centre with a gas-fired combined heat and power plant, says Ridge partner Chris Bradburn.
This generates electricity for the whole site, with waste heat captured and used to generate hot water for the individual blocks.
“The scheme demonstrates that cost effective low carbon solutions that can be achieved when building services are viewed a strategic level of the overall development,” added Bradburn.
The design of the ventilation was influenced by the proximity of the main West Coast Line with mechanical ventilation heat recovery on a number of blocks and elevations providing further energy efficiency approach and promoting a high quality environment
The scheme has been designed by architects Just-H Architects, and it includes a cinema, amenity spaces, meeting rooms, administration offices, a gymnasium, common rooms, commercial spaces, and extensive external landscaped areas.
