Ridge Partner Richard Hand, founder of our Winchester office and our Property Consultancy discipline, is retiring after more than 30 years with the business.
Originally based at our Reading office, Richard created our first South Coast office in 2008 with just three members of staff and a vision for what it might become. Having grown that office organically, he led the acquisition of high-quality local consultancies, successfully integrating everyone within the Ridge organisation and culture. These acquisitions, as well as further strategically planned growth, have resulted in Winchester becoming our second largest office, now employing over 120 staff within 14 teams, which have won many regional and national awards.
A Fellow of both the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and the Chartered Institute of Housing, Richard also founded the Ridge Property Consultancy discipline, providing asset management advisory services to those with a large property portfolio. The team he established now offers nationally recognised services to help clients manage their assets more effectively, helping to provide good quality homes for some of the most vulnerable people in our society. A career highlight was being invited to lead consultancy services for the large-scale voluntary transfer of Glasgow’s 90,000 council houses.
During his career, Richard acted as a CIH expert panel member, was invited to submit evidence to the Government’s ‘Beyond Decent Homes’ Select Committee and was recognised nationally with a Housing Excellence Consultant of the Year award and locally as ‘Business Leader of the Year’ at the Winchester Business Excellence Awards.
Richard personally led the team’s move to high-quality new premises in Kings Worthy, completed in November 2022, providing space for the office to grow in number, further reduce its carbon footprint and expand the services Ridge provides to clients across the South of England.
Richard stepped down as Winchester Office Managing Partner in 2022, having created and grown a thriving and resilient business. He has supported and mentored the current Office Managing Partner David Johnson, as well as the excellent wider leadership team in Winchester, as they build on this legacy and consolidate Ridge Winchester’s position as the South Coast’s property and construction consultants of choice.
As well as enjoying more time with his family, Richard will now be indulging his well-known passion for motorsports, taking the opportunity to follow the Formula 1 circuit worldwide, and spending more time clay shooting.
Ridge Senior Partner Adrian O’Hickey says:
“Our sincere thanks to Richard for the great contribution that he has made to Ridge over the past three decades. We all wish him a very happy and fulfilling retirement.”
