James is an expert planning consultant with over nine years’ experience and whose core experience lies in residential, mixed-use, commercial and education-related projects.

James enjoys working closely with clients to understand their operational requirements in depth and to tailor his planning advice accordingly.

As well as preparing and managing planning applications, he has broad experience in undertaking due diligence and site appraisals to provide clients with robust strategies for achieving permission. He is also skilled in promoting sites via local plan representations, preparing robust objections to schemes and arranging planning consultation events.

James has worked with a wide range of clients, including private individuals, architects, private developers, national organisations, educational establishments and landowners on a variety of developments.

James leads our Winchester office’s Town & Country Planning team, helping to secure planning permissions across the South of England.

Richard Gubbins

Chartered Engineer – BEng (Hons) CEng MCIBSE MIET with over 20 years’ experience.

Richard has been responsible for the delivery of a wide range of project work across many sectors. His career began in Oxford, where he developed expertise in science and research facilities, higher education, and heritage buildings. A decade spent in London broadened Richard’s experience to encompass large-scale residential and commercial projects, leading multi-disciplinary engineering teams on iconic developments such as Battersea Power Station and Olympia London.

Returning to Oxford, Richard is part of the office senior leadership group and has responsibility for the MEP team. He plays an active role in concept design and takes pride in driving value from early client engagement. He has a passion for pragmatic sustainable design and believes that engineering solutions (and the way in which they are presented) should be kept as simple as possible. His current focus is around the advanced manufacturing and science and research sectors.

Ian Laurie

Chartered Building Surveyor with over 27 years of experience.

Ian regularly works on contentious property matters and has specialised in dilapidations and defects analysis for over 20 years. A past member of the RICS Dilapidations Steering Group, Ian regularly provides talks on behalf of the RICS (and others) on dilapidations and wider defects analysis matters.

Ian is a knowledgeable expert and has experience of mediation, adjudication, and litigation. He has provided both oral and written evidence in relation to dilapidations and building defects and has been cross examined.

Natalie Ford

Chartered Mechanical Engineer with 20 years’ experience in the construction industry. Member of the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers.

Natalie’s building services design and expert witness experience includes projects in the UK and Middle East across a range of sectors including residential, hospitality, education, healthcare and transport.

Natalie has experience of litigation and mediation and has prepared advisory reports, expert reports and joint statements, advising clients on disputes relating to the design, installation, testing and commissioning and maintenance of MEP engineering services. She has assisted in the preparation for hearings and participated in expert discussions and mediations in conjunction with the lead expert.

Systems covered include heating, ventilation, cooling, gas, water, controls and fire protection systems for residential and commercial buildings as well as utilities, district heating/cooling distribution networks on larger sites.

Ben is a Member of the RICS (MRICS) with over 15 years of experience and a Cost Management Team from the Reading office.

Ben has a wide variety of experience and provides pre and post-contract cost management services and advice, including cost planning, procurement, the production of tender and contract documentation, in addition to providing Fund Monitoring services.  Ben is also responsible for project delivery and providing Project Management, Employer’s Agent, and Contract Administration services.

Ben is the Retail Sector Lead for the business whilst also providing a broad level of construction advice in various sectors, including leisure, commercial, industrial, residential, heritage and finance. 

Ben has been an APC Assessor on behalf of the RICS for over 10 years and also leads the APC Training for the business, helping to lead and guide 150+ candidates across the practice.

Matthew Smith

Matthew is a Chartered Engineer with over 15 years of civil and structural engineering design experience covering a broad range of sectors and clients, with project values ranging from £5K to £155M. Matthew’s experience has involved a mix of design consultant led and contractor/developer led projects, engineering surveys and reporting, building pathology and forensic engineering, and acting as an expert witness.

From developing his early career within a multidisciplinary construction consultancy, and later within solely engineering firms, Matthew has an in-depth appreciation of the work carried out by all disciplines to ensure the success of a project. Matthew has a keen interest in architecture and the historic environment and is an affiliate member of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC) and a member of The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB).

Matthew now spends most of his time providing expert advice and evidence to clients.
