A new centre for science for Abingdon School to meet the growing demand for scientific education in an expanding school. The scheme provided 21 laboratories arranged into separate floors for biology, physics and chemistry, together with open plan flexible teaching spaces, project rooms, prep rooms and offices.
The client required a low-cost solution whilst still creating a building of fine appearance that would be robust in use. Ridge reviewed the budget and scope, managing a value engineering exercise on both the coach park and the Science Centre building which, together, returned the project to being within the client’s approved budget.
A ‘Very Good’ BREEAM rating has been achieved through careful specification and design, together with integration of the management procedures for the new building with the rest of the school.
The Science Centre is designed so it can be extended to provide a new lecture theatre forming a gateway into the school.
Ridge managed the design and construction phases through to successful completion by the start of the 2015/2016 academic year. The project was divided into phases to undertake enabling works ahead of the main construction contract.
