The existing science teaching facilities had remained largely unchanged since 1974. The school required a new modern teaching faculty to allow science lessons to be provided in a modern teaching environment and inspire young students.
The client required a cost effective modern solution whilst still creating a building of fine appearance that will be robust and efficient in use.
This requirement resulted in a new centre for science for Bedford Modern School. The scheme provided 17 laboratories, arranged into separate floors for biology, physics and chemistry, together with an atrium, prep rooms and offices.
Ridge supplied cost management services and delivered cost advice from conception to completion.
Projects options were assessed at the early stages of the project, which considered the refurbishment of the existing teaching facilities, however the cost of temporary science teaching spaces during the construction stage made this option unviable.
The project required extensive existing services diversions which crossed the proposed site. In order to minimise risk / financial exposure to the school these works were carried out under an enabling works contract prior to the main contract.
As part of the cost management role, Ridge created and maintained throughout the life of the project a total project cost report including all project fees and client direct costs. As part of the cost report Ridge continually managed, updated and implemented a project risk register.
