Complete refurbishment of the Grade II listed Steiner Academy, to provide an energy-efficient, flexible educational workspace within the original layout and the construction of a new bespoke sports hall.
The original 1852 building is Grade II* listed. The school comprises a single building of numerous blocks, levels and construction. The campus had not previously undergone any significant improvement works in the period since the initial construction and therefore the energy performance of the building was very poor.
Ridge was employed to carry out the concept and tender package design on a design and build basis through RIBA Stages 0 – 3. Skanska continued the design development with Ridge for Stages 4 – 7 to complete the detailed design and monitor the installation on site.
From concept through to completion, Ridge provided strategic advice on energy mitigation principles and low carbon technologies.
Numerous floor levels and irregular room shapes made the project very difficult to service, particularly to stay sympathetic to the Grade II* listing and conservation officers’ requirements.
As part of project, Ridge designed new building services throughout and dramatically reduced the CO2 footprint of the original building.
We used REVITT and IES software to evaluate the existing performance and reported on potential improvement measures, with buy-in from all stakeholders.
We then introduced biomass boilers, PV panels, intelligent controls systems and LED lighting to complement the existing building form and features.
