Ascot Racecourse needed to transform its 750m² jockey changing rooms to meet modern standards of safeguarding, privacy and welfare.

The £2.3 million refurbishment provided an opportunity to rethink the facilities from the ground up, creating a more private, flexible and inclusive environment for jockeys and their support teams.

Safeguarding driving the brief

Updated safeguarding requirements from the British Horseracing Authority provided a clear starting point. The changing rooms needed to reflect the particular dynamics of race day, where jockeys work alongside personal valets and privacy is essential.

Dedicated under-18 cubicles, improved segregation and carefully planned privacy measures were incorporated throughout, creating an environment that supports welfare and accessibility.

Built around the athlete

The design responds to how jockeys and valets actually use the facilities. Bespoke changing bays and ergonomic layouts make the most of the space, while new ice baths, two physio rooms and a gym support recovery and wellbeing.

The valet areas are equally considered, with oak tables designed to be reconfigured as operational needs change, alongside saddle racks, hooks, benching and washing and drying equipment.

The weighing room was also reconfigured as part of the wider refurbishment, alongside a new lounge and kitchen servery providing a more relaxed space away from the demands of race day.

Flexibility for a changing sport

A shared central zone between the male and female changing areas allows the balance of space to be adjusted as required. Different configurations can respond to the day's racing programme and changing participation levels, giving Ascot greater flexibility over the long term.

Material choices reinforce the character of the racecourse. Black metalwork, leather detailing, marble tiles and durable industrial-grade fittings take their cues from the traditional tack room, while bespoke joinery adds a more refined finish.

A benchmark for modern welfare

The completed facilities give Ascot a modern environment designed around the welfare, privacy and practical needs of jockeys and valets.

The Professional Jockeys Association recognised the facilities as among the best in the world, reflecting the quality of the transformation and Ascot's commitment to supporting those who use the racecourse.

It is the latest project in a relationship between Ridge and Ascot that now spans two decades.

The new jockey changing rooms are really outstanding – the best I’ve seen in the UK.”
