The Northern Line Extension set out to connect Battersea to the Underground network, unlocking growth across a rapidly changing part of London.
It brought together new stations, over-site development and a wide mix of stakeholders, all within a live and complex urban environment.
Keeping a complex programme on track
Extending the Northern Line meant working across multiple sites, teams and interfaces. The challenge was not just delivery, but coordination.
We joined Transport for London’s Major Projects team, supporting programme strategy and day-to-day decisions. Acting as lead planner for the stations and infrastructure, we guided planning and project controls while reviewing contractor programmes in detail.
This was practical work. Testing timelines against real construction. Challenging assumptions. Making sure plans worked in the real world.
We also worked closely with Network Rail, local authorities and neighbouring developments, including Battersea Power Station. Aligning logistics across the wider Vauxhall, Nine Elms and Battersea area helped reduce clashes before they could slow progress.
Finding time and reducing risk
Through detailed programme reviews, we identified more than 18 months of potential time savings. Some came from refining construction sequencing, others from taking a clear view on approvals and interfaces. In one case, scaling back a sensitive element of work helped unlock progress across the wider scheme.
We kept a close watch on time-related risks, from tunnelling works to station delivery. Regular updates to senior leaders gave a clear picture of programme confidence and where action was needed.
This was about more than keeping to schedule. It was about giving the project room to move when it mattered most.
A new connection for London
The Northern Line now links Battersea to the wider Underground network, supporting new homes, jobs and public spaces.
Behind the scenes, the programme needed careful coordination and clear thinking to stay on course. That focus helped turn a complex scheme into a working piece of infrastructure.
The result is a transport link that fits naturally into the city and supports how London continues to grow.
More than an extension
This project goes beyond tracks, ventilation and intervention shafts, and stations. It supports the wider regeneration of Vauxhall, Nine Elms and Battersea, helping to create a place where people can live, work and connect.
From early planning through to delivery, the focus stayed simple – keep the programme clear, keep it moving and make it work in the real world.
