Skanska set out to reimagine Battersea Power Station, a major piece of London’s industrial heritage, as a vibrant mixed‑use destination on the south bank of the Thames.
A redevelopment of this scale could not afford confusion – it demanded a clear yet adaptable plan that every team could rely on across a three‑year programme.
Reviving a former power station
Battersea Power Station is one of London’s most recognisable buildings – bringing it back into use meant carefully balancing heritage, scale and modern infrastructure.
We were appointed by a longstanding client we’ve supported since 2002. As part of their Pre‑Construction Services Agreement team, our project management consultants led the planning and management of the pre‑construction phase for the £1.5 billion refurbishment project, along with a new energy centre serving the entire site.
Our project and programme delivery team supported the early planning phase, working closely with design teams, subcontractors, BIM specialists, the contractor and the client’s project manager. The contract environment was highly complex, with frequent client‑driven changes.
Keeping a complex landmark project on track
As design details evolved and construction sequencing shifted, the programme had to remain flexible without losing its overall structure. Rather than trying to lock the programme down, we kept it live and responsive. When major adjustments arose, the plan adapted in a controlled, transparent way that kept progress visible and reduced uncertainty.
Coordinating four main design disciplines, numerous subcontractors, the client, their project manager, the BIM team and the contractor, we brought all these moving parts together into a single coherent schedule.
Unifying teams through FLOW
FLOW, our company‑built integrated scheduling system, became the backbone for three years of continuous monitoring and management. It allowed us to assess impacts, track progress against key milestones and resequence work in response to major client‑driven changes.
Throughout delivery, we provided an independent, trusted perspective that delivered transparency and confidence for all parties. Tailored reporting and regular progress reviews kept everyone in sync as priorities evolved. Key milestones, dependencies and deadlines remained visible and easy to follow, helping teams focus on what mattered next rather than getting lost in detail.
Bringing new energy to the South Bank
The £1.5 billion refurbishment forms part of a wider £9 billion development creating a new neighbourhood that connects with the Northern Line Extension. Now open, the revitalised landmark delivers 253 new homes, 100 retail, food and beverage units, a 2,000‑capacity events space and 500,000ft² of modern office accommodation, bringing new energy, activity and opportunity to the South Bank.
