Ridge named in the Regenerative Architecture Index 2026

Ridge has been included in the Regenerative Architecture Index (RAI) 2026, joining 119 organisations recognised for their commitment to regenerative design, delivery and practice.

The Index, created by UK Architects Declare and Architecture Today in partnership with Schüco, benchmarks how practices are moving beyond reducing harm towards creating genuinely positive outcomes for people, places and the natural world. Organisations submitted detailed responses across three themes: being a good ancestor, co-evolving with nature, and creating a just space for people. 

What regenerative practice means for the built environment

For decades, sustainability in construction has focused on minimising damage – lower emissions, less waste, reduced resource use. Regenerative design asks a bigger question: how can a building actively improve the world around it, for people today and generations to come? 

That shift matters. The built environment accounts for a significant share of the UK’s carbon emissions, but its impact goes well beyond carbon. Regenerative thinking considers biodiversity, community wellbeing, social value and long-term resilience as part of the same conversation as material choices and energy performance.

Regenerative principles in practice

Princes SEN Primary School in Liverpool is one example of this approach at work. Ridge is delivering interdisciplinary services – architecture, engineering, sustainability and project delivery – for a new specialist school bringing four oversubscribed sites together on one six-acre campus.

The 63,000ft² school is designed to be fully net zero in operation and target BREEAM Very Good, with 31 accessible classrooms, sensory spaces and two hydrotherapy pools. Outdoor areas have been shaped with landscape architects to create forested, sensory spaces that support calm, play and learning. 

Biophilic design sits at the heart of the scheme. Strong connections to the natural environment throughout the school are intended to support wellbeing, improve concentration and engagement, and create a calmer, more positive setting for both pupils and staff. Every classroom has direct access to external space, giving pupils the opportunity to self-regulate and step into outdoor learning or therapeutic environments whenever they need to. 

A public-facing café and community space will help the school build stronger ties with its neighbourhood, extending its value well beyond the pupils it serves.  

It’s a project that reflects what regenerative practice looks like in reality: design that responds to nature, serves community need, and leaves a place better equipped for the future than it found it.

Projects like Princes SEN Primary School show what's possible when you design around people and place from day one, not just to reduce harm, but to create somewhere that genuinely supports the community around it for years to come.”

Looking ahead

Inclusion in the RAI 2026 reflects a broader shift across the industry. As more clients and practices move towards regenerative thinking, the focus is expanding from individual projects to long-term impact across communities, ecosystems and future generations.
