This landmark project expands and remodels the College’s historic library footprint, creating 915 sq. m of fully accessible, DDA-compliant space. The new facility includes climate-controlled archive storage, a dedicated readers’ room, offices for librarians and archivists, and additional working areas which are all served by a new passenger lift and bespoke high-end joinery.
Our Role
Ridge was appointed to provide cost management services, working closely with the client team from the earliest stages to assess risks, advise on budget strategy and support decision making throughout the project’s life cycle.
Our team collaborated with the architect and structural engineer to develop multiple structural frame options that supported the project’s goals for thermal mass, structural loading, and airtightness which are all critical to achieving Passivhaus certification.
The site presented several challenges, including restricted access, façade retention, cranage logistics, noise constraints, and proximity to neighbouring properties. Ridge collaborated with the architect and structural engineer to develop a range of structural frame options that supported the project’s goals for airtightness, thermal mass, and structural loading – all essential components of Passivhaus design.
Delivering Value
Before contract award, Ridge undertook a detailed assessment of the basement reuse potential and the commercial viability of expansion, balancing cost against archaeological risk. We modelled the impact of structural changes above ground and helped the client navigate complex decisions with clarity and confidence.
During demolition, unexpected site discoveries required a rapid and flexible response. Ridge worked with Corpus Christi and the wider design team to revise construction information and mitigate unnecessary commercial exposure.
The project also faced material sourcing challenges due to Brexit and Covid-19, particularly in securing components that met Passivhaus standards. Ridge supported the architect in maintaining the integrity of the approved design while managing supply chain risks.
A Sustainable Legacy
The completion of the Special Collections Library marks a significant step forward in sustainable design for Oxford University. Ridge is proud to have played a key role in delivering a building that not only meets the highest environmental standards but also enhances access to knowledge and heritage for generations to come.
