Diamond Light Extension Oxfordshire

Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron – one of the most advanced scientific facilities in the world. It gives off light that is 10bn times brighter than the sun that scientists use to study anything from fossils to viruses and vaccines. The 20-year-old facility now needs to be replaced in order to assemble, store and ultimately replace this beamline technology. Office and laboratory locations are required for 115 staff.

Our Role

Our role is to design a new facility for the assembly and storage of the national synchrotron with office space and advanced laboratories. We provided Architectural services as well as Structural, Mechanical, Electrical and Civil Engineering. Our design, multidisciplinary approach and BIM modelling ensured that the project delivered beyond our client’s expectations despite deep technical requirements and site constraints.

Added Value

We carried out multiple workshops to overcome design risks involving the tight nature of the site and the location of critical infrastructure very close to the edge of the proposed building. We ensured the project could adapt to future procurement needs that align with the client’s funding streams. We delivered a bespoke innovative solution to the need for modular demountable partitions that also satisfied high levels of acoustic separation.
