Philip Baston

Philip Baston is a chartered architect with experience supporting expert witness and technical advisory work in construction and property disputes. He has contributed to matters involving defect analysis, technical investigations, professional negligence and the preparation of structured technical evidence. Philip is currently undertaking the King’s College Master’s in construction law to aid his transition from design to expert witness work.

Philip brings extensive practical knowledge of design, procurement, and construction delivery. He has significant on-site experience and a strong understanding of how buildings are assembled, from bespoke private residential projects to large-scale developments. His experience includes technically demanding domestic schemes featuring complex basements, swimming pools, and high-specification detailing, as well as projects requiring careful integration of accessible design principles. This experience is underpinned by a clear understanding of the architect’s role, duties, and standard of care in practice, particularly in the context of design responsibility, coordination, and professional liability. He also has a strong working knowledge of the principal designer role, including duties under the CDM Regulations and the Building Regulations.

With experience across the full RIBA Plan of Work, he has led multidisciplinary teams on listed building regeneration, residential schemes and bespoke housing, combining detailed technical understanding with a commercially informed and buildable approach.

He is trusted for his structured thinking, professional judgement, and ability to present clear and balanced technical opinions.
