Responding to a lack of safe outdoor spaces, London Borough of Hackney set out to transform part of the Old Baths site into a vibrant, youth‑designed hub.

We acted as construction consultant, cost manager, employer’s agent and principal designer.

Delivering a sustainable, community-first space

We acted as construction consultant, cost manager, employer’s agent and principal designer. Working closely with the council and architect, we helped bring a youth-led vision to life, delivering a durable, flexible facility on a tight budget and short programme. The site includes a multi-use games area (MUGA) and a single-storey building with a classroom, office space, storage and accessible toilets.

Sustainability sat at the heart of the design. The building uses Cross Laminated Timber (CLT), a low-carbon and long-lasting material, while the wider site encourages outdoor activity and engagement with nature. Through close collaboration with the council, design team and local community, we shaped a space that reflects the borough’s needs and values.

Award-winning and widely used

Completed in early 2022, the £843,000 project is now run by Young Hackney and was officially opened by the Mayor. It has quickly become a vital hub for the borough’s Early Help service, offering a safe and inclusive space for young people aged 6–19, or up to 25 for those with SEND. In 2022, the project won a New London Award in the Wellbeing category.

Designed to grow with the community

This hub is more than a sports space – it’s a long-term investment in Hackney Wick. Built from sustainable materials and shaped by local voices, it offers a flexible, inclusive environment that supports wellbeing, opportunity and community pride.
