THE ASPIRATION
A modern, inclusive school for Cardiff
Fitzalan High School was delivered as part of the Welsh Government’s 21st Century Schools programme, aiming to create a state-of-the-art education campus for 1,500 students. The £64 million project set out to provide inspiring, flexible learning spaces alongside high-quality community sports facilities. Designed as a beacon for sustainable education, the new school needed to meet BREEAM Excellent standards while promoting local engagement and long-term social value.
OUR RESPONSE
Engineering smart, sustainable solutions
From early planning to completion, our Civil and Structural Engineering and Transport Planning teams worked collaboratively to bring the client’s vision to life. We delivered enabling works, advanced sustainable drainage systems and a detailed transport plan to ensure safe, efficient access for students and the community. Engineering two interlinked buildings, including an 1,800-seat vocational training hall, required careful coordination and future-proof design. We also supported the school’s sustainability goals through energy-efficient materials and infrastructure that minimise environmental impact.
THE RESULT
A state-of-the-art campus built to last
Completed in 2024, Fitzalan High School now provides 88 classrooms, nine science labs, a drama studio, a sports hall and a large dining area. The BREEAM Excellent design integrates sustainability throughout, from water management to structural efficiency. The site also features exceptional sports facilities – including a 25m swimming pool and four multi-use games areas – which are shared with the local community.
THE LASTING IMPACT
Building for people and the planet
The new Fitzalan High School is more than a place of learning – it’s a vibrant community hub that supports wellbeing, skills development and environmental responsibility. Our integrated engineering approach delivered a high-performing, future-ready building that will benefit students and local residents for generations to come.

Fitzalan High School was a major undertaking, combining civil and structural engineering on a complex site. From drainage and access planning to the structural design of twin buildings, the challenges were significant. Seeing the school now open and serving students and the wider community makes all that effort worthwhile.
