THE ASPIRATION
From industrial icon to innovation hub
On the banks of the Thames in central Oxford, the University of Oxford’s Saïd Business School is transforming the historic Osney Power Station into a world-leading Global Centre of Executive Education. The school’s existing residential facility no longer reflects its ambition. This landmark redevelopment reimagines a disused, locally listed Victorian power station into a high-performance, future-ready learning environment. The aspiration is bold: to inspire the next generation of global leaders through a space that blends heritage, innovation and sustainability.
OUR RESPONSE
Precision project management
We are delivering full Project Management services for this highly complex, multi-phase redevelopment. Navigating sensitive planning constraints – from Oxford’s Carfax height rule to stringent heritage protections – while managing serious environmental risks like flooding, we’ve steered a challenging programme from design through to delivery.
The building retains historic features such as original brickwork, steel windows and gantry cranes, while seamlessly integrating cutting-edge systems – including a concealed rooftop air source heat pump, an engineering first for Ridge – to meet zero-carbon in-use targets.
Tight site constraints have required inventive logistics and construction methods. These include flood defences, precise river wall repairs via a coffer dam, and the protection of archaeological discoveries such as medieval remains. Clear, consistent communication and active local engagement have helped minimise the impact of the site’s close proximity to residential areas. Throughout, we’ve enforced rigorous quality standards, supported by digital tools like 360° site photography and real-time dashboards.
THE RESULT
Where legacy meets leadership
Due for completion by the end of 2025, the project will deliver flexible teaching spaces, advanced AV/IT suites, fine dining and leisure areas, and over 120 en-suite bedrooms. Sustainable features such as photovoltaic panels, mechanical heat recovery systems and smart energy controls ensure long-term performance with minimal environmental footprint.
THE LASTING IMPACT
Powering purpose for generations
This transformation delivers more than a building – it creates a lasting civic, academic and environmental legacy. The project reinforces Saïd Business School’s commitment to sustainability and strengthens its presence in Oxford. By preserving a historic site while enabling cutting-edge education, Osney Power Station becomes a landmark for both the University and the city, built to serve generations to come.
