A leading Formula 1 team needed a new state-of-the-art Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Centre to accelerate their aerodynamic simulations.
This required integrating a supercomputer within the sensitive landscape of their Oxfordshire headquarters.
Engineering an underground innovation hub
We delivered architecture, building services engineering, cost management, project management and structural engineering for this uniquely challenging project. Because the site sits within a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), the entire facility had to be built underground. The solution was a pre-cast concrete arch system normally used for tunnels and bridges – and never before applied to a building of this type.
Working closely with the manufacturer, we tailored the system to form the main envelope of the building. Excavating and reusing 14,000m³ of soil on site removed the need for 1,700 HGV movements through local villages, reducing disruption and environmental impact.
Once the groundworks were complete, the primary structure went up in just five days, a clear demonstration of the speed and efficiency of the pre-cast approach.
A cutting-edge subterranean facility
The completed CFD Centre spans 1,105m² and includes a supercomputer hall, an entrance tunnel that takes visitors below ground into the exhibition space, a 60‑seat auditorium and offices for 30 engineers.
Its underground design meets the facility’s technical needs while protecting the Cotswold landscape and satisfying strict planning conditions. The project was recognised with a Concrete Society Award for Innovation.
The subterranean layout also creates a distinctive internal environment, with carefully framed views out to the surrounding landscape – a calm, focused space that still maintains a strong connection to its setting.
Accelerating design, minimising footprint
This facility plays a central role in the team’s ability to simulate, refine and optimise aerodynamic performance, cutting reliance on wind‑tunnel testing and speeding up design iterations. Our careful approach protected the local environment, showing how advanced technology and ecological responsibility can sit comfortably side by side.
