Claire House Hospice, Alteration & Refurbishment Bebington
Alteration and refurbishment to the Claire House Children’s Hospice in Bebington, which remained occupied throughtout the works.
Due to a demand on space, the client sought to expand, create additional facilities and overhaul the internal layout to use the existing areas more efficiently. Whilst the hospice adheres to clinical standards, the fit-out and appearance has to also be welcoming and child-friendly.
The scheme was split into three sections and works were phased to enable the hospice to remain open for the duration of the project:
Section 1: A new 2-storey entrance with additional office space was created, as well as a new teenage den and counselling space
Section 2: A new laundry/ sluice area was provided
Section 3: Existing children’s bedrooms were refurbished with a small extension to two. Existing corridors, kitchen and dining rooms were refurbished.

The new entrance and reception is a flagship area representing the hospice. The extension was a steel frame, with a flat roof, a mixture of colour glazed curtain walling, block/ render and Trespa cladding. Trespa “lollipop” features were also installed. Internally, a double height area was created at front of house, with 2-storey office/reception area created to the back.
The laundry and extensions were new build brick and block constructions. These areas provide teenagers with new larger social/relaxation space away from their bedrooms. The existing den and laundry were converted into counselling and sensory rooms. All the areas were refurbished in accordance with the architect’s specification.
End user involvement was maintained throughout, with teenagers being involved in painting and other activities where possible.
Building services installations throughout the hospice were overhauled to provide new CCTV, access control, heating and fire alarms throughout, with new and refurbished areas incurring further enhancements to the building services.
On the first floor, the existing open plan office has been altered to provide four individual offices so that various teams are located near each other and their facilities.
An existing first floor storeroom was refurbished to provide a new staff kitchen area.
