Chartered Civil and Structural engineer (BEng Hons, CEng MICE) with 20 years’ experience.
Andy’s broad range of UK and International experience ensures detailed technical solutions are coupled with sound commercial advice.
At all stages of design Andy seeks to unlock the hidden value that can be found in every project. He leads teams on projects of all sizes and is a strong and committed player on the design team.
Our drive to reduce both embodied and operational carbon underpins our engineering thinking at every design stage. We recognise the impact our designs can have on the climate for future generations, and always seek to raise awareness amongst our clients and supply chains through whole life carbon modelling, and the re-use of existing structural forms where possible.
We respond positively to unique project constraints and objectives, including: budget, programme, design concept, building or structure performance criteria, future flexibility, site logistics, and neighbouring assets. As a multidiscipline consultancy, our structural engineers are accustomed to assessing and processing these constraints, to uncover design opportunities that other engineers may fail to recognise.
With our rigorous approach to structural design, we explore solutions from first principles to optimise the performance of the foundations, frames and facades, and quantify the implications for energy usage and environmental impact. Employing the latest analytical and 3D modelling software we can quickly and efficiently develop and test design options to establish an optimal economic and buildable solution.

Sam is an architecturally trained Chartered Structural Engineer with over 20 years of professional experience.
Sam leads our Bristol Structural and Civil Engineering team, working with planners and main contractors to offer a full spectrum of structures and civils services, including engineering, design and risk management. He is an experienced leader, having delivered complex multi-disciplinary projects and managed diverse, specialist engineering and consultancy teams, with a strong collaborative, inclusive and team-based ethos.
Sam has a raft of experience in the design of buildings and infrastructure projects in the public and private sectors. His portfolio includes the design of new build and complex refurbishment projects ranging in value between £50,000 to £250 million, with specific experience in the education, healthcare, sports, retail, commercial, industrial, and residential markets.
For over a decade we have been using Building Information Modelling (BIM) to provide clients and architects with a visual showcase of how all design components work together. This also assists in optimising the structural efficiency of the design. The technology enables Ridge to assess the viability of the project and challenge the suitability of the design and material choices made against cost, time and sustainability criteria.
Our structural engineering services can be deployed at any stage of a project, either as a single or multidiscipline commission. We provide initial advice for business cases and feasibility studies, concept and detailed design, production of full construction and production information. We engineer projects of all sizes and types ranging from £100m mixed-use new-build to specialist structural surveys on historic buildings all over the world.
Read moreUsing the latest laser scanning and measuring equipment Ridge have the in-house capability to survey existing structures and convert them into CAD models to be used as an integral tool for designers to progress their detailed design. Our surveys capture the intricate details that are vital when working with, or adjacent to, existing buildings. This latest technology enables Ridge to record high-resolution 3D data sets of buildings, sites and monuments in an accurate and cost effective manner. The density and quality of the point clouds generated allow the office based team to effectively describe the surface of a structure in various 2D drawing and 3D model formats that can be tailored to suit the specific requirements of the client.
