The project compromised a decade-long restoration of the iconic art-deco Hackney Town Hall, built in the 1930s and located in the heart of Hackney.

The Town Hall is the administrative HQ for the London Borough of Hackney and accommodates approx. 500 staff. It also offers approved premises for civil ceremonies and venues for private hire. The Grade II listed, 4-storey building was built in 1930’s and is renowned for its exemplary art deco interiors and detailing, much of which had avoided modernisation and therefore remained intact.

Works to refurbish the Town Hall were initiated in 2008. Ridge was appointed at the outset to administer the Enabling Works Contract and services were then retained through to completion.

Throughout the project, Ridge provided management and cost control of the diverse variety of skilled and specialist craftsmanship.

A decade-long restoration project revitalised the iconic Hackney Town Hall. Essential renovation works have not only maintained the integrity of the original character, but the seamless integration of new initiatives has made the building ‘fit-for-purpose’ for public occupation.

The building continued to be fully open and operational throughout the period of restoration; this was achieved by a phased programme of works, adjusted as required to minimise the disruption to occupants and to ensure the continued use of the building for civil ceremonies. Associated noise levels were minimised by the construction of sound screens within the building.

The final phase included the enclosure of the existing lightwells to form new internal function space for weddings and conferences. The project involved working closely with specialist trades, contractors and conservation teams for the restoration of the original art deco features throughout the building.
